Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), now classified as Diffuse Midline Glioma (DMG), is one of the most aggressive and heartbreaking childhood brain cancers. It doesn’t wait. It doesn’t slow down. And for most families, it changes everything in a matter of weeks.
This disease steals childhoods.
It affects children who were just learning to ride bikes, starting school, or planning their next birthday party. It strikes without warning, and because of where it grows in the brain, it cannot be surgically removed. Treatment options are limited, and cures do not yet exist.

This tumor grows deep in the brainstem, the part of the brain that controls breathing, movement, speech, and basic life functions. As it spreads through healthy tissue, it slowly takes away abilities that most of us take for granted.
Children may lose the ability to walk, speak, swallow, or even smile. And yet, through it all, they remain aware, loved, and fighting.

Right now, DIPG/DMG has a survival rate that is tragically low:
- Median survival is often less than 12 months
- Long-term survival is extremely rare
- There is currently no cure
Radiation can sometimes slow progression or temporarily improve symptoms, but it is not a cure. Families are often left with limited time and impossible decisions.

One of the most painful truths about this disease is how underfunded it is.
- Pediatric cancers receive only about 4% of federal cancer research funding in the United States
- Brain tumors like DIPG/DMG receive an even smaller fraction of that
- Despite being one of the deadliest childhood cancers, DIPG research remains significantly underfunded compared to adult cancers
This means breakthroughs are slower than they should be. It means promising treatments take longer to reach children who need them now. And it means families are left waiting for answers that may come too late.
